Spindle- or lemon-shaped viruses that infect archaea have been observed in diverse environments around the globe. Due to highly pleomorphic nature of these virions, which frequently can be found with cylindrical tails emanating from spindle-shaped body, structural studies remarkable capsids challenging. We determined atomic structure capsid Sulfolobus monocaudavirus 1, a virus infects hosts living nearly boiling acid. show hydrophilic protein previously thought major is not involved formation.
